Sabbath Services

Purpose of the Sabbath service

to remind us of God's never-ending commandment to keep the Sabbath holy

to remind us of our Jewish heritage

recognize Jesus and the Son of God, the Messiah.

For centuries the Christian Church has struggled over what it means to "keep the Sabbath", a commandment given to us by God as one of the Ten Commandments. God said it is to be a day of rest from our work, a day set separated from the other six days of work, so we can be refreshed and as a recognition that God rested after six days of creating the heavens and earth.

The Jewish community traditionally ushers in the Sabbath at sunset every Friday by lighting candles, praying and sharing a meal. We choose to do this once a month with a modified "traditional" service by including Jesus as Messiah. We light candles to emphasis that this is a time of difference, of separation from all other time and to recognize Jesus as the light of the world. We give thanks for the bread and wine in honor of Gods goodness for providing us with food and drink and for giving us Jesus as the bread of life and the true vine; we pray for each other as husbands, wives, parents and children and that we may live in peace and harmony with all creation. Then we enjoy a simple meal of soup, bread and salad as we share our lives together around a table.
